History

We build digital health infrastructure with a practical view of interoperability, data and operations.

  1. 2010

    Founded in Costa Rica

    Meddyg starts out as a Costa Rican technology startup focused on digital medical imaging management. It takes part in projects such as the Centro de Imágenes Médicas (CIMED), which brings the country's first PET/CT scanner to Costa Rica.

  2. 2013

    Expansion into Guatemala and the Dose© platform

    Meddyg takes part in the PET/CT implementation at Hospital El Pilar in Guatemala City, and builds Dose©, its own platform for monitoring the dosimetry of workers occupationally exposed to radiation.

  3. International expansion

    PACS architectures in the Dominican Republic

    Outside Costa Rica, Meddyg implements PACS and diagnostic workstation architectures for DICOM-based medical imaging exchange in public hospitals of the Dominican Republic's Servicio Nacional de Salud (SNS).

  4. 2022

    First FHIR guide for AEFI reporting

    Part of the Meddyg team acts as a consultant on the design of the first HL7© FHIR© implementation guide for regional AEFI (Adverse Events Following Immunization) reporting, and on the design and implementation of the infrastructure that would receive those reports.

  5. 2024

    First national FHIR server for EDUS/CCSS

    Meddyg takes part in designing, profiling and publishing the HL7© FHIR© implementation guide for reporting notifiable diseases, vaccines and lab results. It implements and deploys to production the first FHIR server to receive these reports from EDUS/CCSS (Costa Rica's national digital health record, run by the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social), later extended to other health providers.

  6. 2025

    Digitally signing FHIR resources with the Central Bank of Costa Rica

    The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) invites Meddyg to help integrate the JAdES format into GAUDI, its digital signature and sealing platform. Meddyg provides technical assistance so the BCCR's teams can enable signing of FHIR resources.

  7. 2025–2026

    National interoperability over X-Road

    Meddyg runs proofs of concept with Costa Rica's National Digital Government Agency to validate FHIR resource transactions over the national X-Road platform. This work is part of Costa Rica's functional interoperability demonstration — technically led together with other companies in the ecosystem — which confirmed that different health systems can securely exchange information without centralizing the data.

Mission

Design and build digital health infrastructure that lets organizations, systems and professionals exchange information securely, interoperably and with clinical meaning. At Meddyg we combine international standards, open architectures and specialized expertise to build sustainable solutions that connect data, services and institutions, lower integration barriers and strengthen digital health ecosystems.

Vision

To be a Latin American reference in interoperability and digital health infrastructure, helping build ecosystems where clinical information can follow the patient safely and reliably, regardless of the institution, system or technology that originates it. We aim to drive a digital health built on open standards, sustainable architectures and local capabilities, able to connect the public and private sectors and evolve without depending on a single vendor.

Alejandro Benavides has led this work as Meddyg's CEO. He also provides technical assistance and advisory support to government institutions and civil associations — such as DHIT and the Global Life Centered Hub — to help advance the understanding and adoption of digital health standards, reference models and best practices in interoperability.
